An Italian website operated by Italian convert Hamza Piccardo, a founder and former Secretary-General of the Unione delle Comunità ed organizzazioni Islamiche in Italia (UCOII), has posted a fatwa that appears to support execution of those who renounce the Islamic faith when they publicly announce their decision:

The execution of anyone who abandons Islam is the responsibility of the State and can be decided by governments and islamic organizations and institutions…. In any case, a considerable number of our predecessors(Salaf) agree in saying that all those that abandon Islam do not have to be executed, but rather those that in public declare their action and can strife (Fitna) denigrating the name of Allah the Highest one, the punishment of execution in this case serves to protect and preserve the entire nation from the evil that this individual undoubtedly would carry.

Youssef Qaradawi, the most important leader of the global Muslim Brotherhood, also appears to support the death penalty for those who announce their “apostasy.” The UCOII is the largest Muslim Brotherhood organization in Italy.
