Canadian media is reporting that organizers behind the construction of a mosque in the Arctic territory of Nunavut have turned to the help of Islamic scholar Dr. Abdullah Hakim Quick, known to have once described Jews and Christians as “filthy” and who advocates the execution of homosexuals. According to the CBC report:

July 9, 2015 Organizers with the Islamic Society of Nunavut say they need more money to finish Nunavut’s first mosque, which is currently under construction in Iqaluit.

The Islamic Society has enlisted the help of Islamic scholar Dr. Abdullah Hakim Quick. Quick launched a online crowd-funding campaign a week ago with the goal of raising $100,000. As of early July 9 the campaign had already raised nearly $62,000 with donations from around the world.

“Hopefully with these funds we will have enough to enclose the building and have the basic amenities but you always need more money to finish the interior,” said Sadaqat Ali, a long-time Iqaluit resident and volunteer co-ordinator for the mosque project.

Money left over after the building is finished will be transferred into programming, he said.

“We’d like to get it kick-started, not only for the Muslim community but for all of Iqaluit.”

Construction has been underway for six weeks and the building is beginning to take shape. Two floors have been built and the sewage line was connected on Wednesday.

Ali says the society plans to open the mosque by December this year.

In January 2013, the GMBDW reported on what is still the northernmost sighting of the Global Muslim Brotherhood when Abdullah Hakim Quick visited the Muslim community in Iqaluit. Also in January 2013, an appeal for funds to build an Islamic Center in Iqaluit. was issued in the name of Dr. Quick, described in an online bio  as a special advisor to the Ministry of Islamic Affairs of the Kingdom of Bahrain and Director of Outreach for the Canadian Council of Imams.

Abdullah Hakim Quick has various ties to the Global Muslim Brotherhood including serving as a trustee of IBERR, a little known organization headquartered in South Africa founded by Yusuf Islam (formerly Cat Stevens) and which distributes Islamic educational material around the world. In March 2010 a post reported that Dr. Quick, who had described Jews and Christians as “filthy” and advocates the execution of homosexuals, had been invited to speak before a Swedish Muslim youth organization. Dr. Quick has since defended his remarks on homosexuals but said his remarks on Christians and Jews referred to the  “spiritual corruption that afflicts some members of religious groups which in turn leads to injustice against innocent people.”
