Mideast media is reporting that the International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS), headed by Global Muslim Brotherhood leader Youssef Qaradawi, has called for Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and the rest of the government and step down and “establish a regime with a new philosophy and constitution.” According to a MEMRI translation.

The International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS), which is headed by Sheikh Yousuf Al-Qaradhawi, has issued a communiqué calling for Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to step down along with the entire current Egyptian government, and to hold objective elections for the presidency, the people’s council, and the shura council, in order to establish a regime with a new philosophy and constitution. The IUMS has accused the regime of restricting political and religious freedom in the country, of openly falsifying election results, of disregarding the complaints of the public over the economic and political situation, and of plundering the capital of the people. It attacked members of the ruling party who fled the country with the people’s money and left Egypt behind in ruins. The IUMS stated that Mubarak is the main culprit in the deaths of demonstrators – i.e. the martyrs who went out to wage jihad – and called for the establishment of civilian courts to try those guilty of crimes against the people, particularly the security personnel who killed demonstrators. The IUMS saluted the Egyptian army and called on the entire Egyptian public to join the protests until the regime was brought down.

The International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS) was launched on July 11, 2004 in conjunction with a visit by Youssef Qaradawi to London for a meeting of the European Council for Fatwa and Research. Qaradawi is perhaps the most important leader of the global Muslim Brotherhood and the IUMS board of directors is comprised of many leaders of the global Brotherhood.
