The Islam Online island in the virtual world known as Second Life has announced its first foray into politics with it’s notice about a rally to be held tomorrow in support of lifting the Israeli blockade against Gaza designed to pressure Hamas into stopping the firing of rockets into Israel. According to the notice:

Gaza is facing a serious humanitarian crisis with the ongoing blockade enforced by Israel. Tomorrow, Tuesday, January 22, 2008, at 7:00AM SL time, IslamOnline.net invites you all to a PEACFUL rally in its new island in support of lifting the blockade. This is not about politics – this is about the simple facts that innocents are dying and we can’t sit and ignore it. Please invite all your friends whether Muslims or non-Muslims and pass this notice to other groups as well. The more people the better!

Islam Online (IOL) is the Islamic news portal operated by global Muslim Brotherhood leader Youssef Qaradawi and a previous post has discussed the opening of its Second life island, essentially a private server in the virtual world. As that post noted, IOL had already announced that a haj “training experience” for Japanese Muslims was launched in conjunction with the opening of the new Second Life location.
